Hello! I’m back from Munich; I attended my first Oktoberfest and it was so much fun…here’s how I fit in marathon training for the Cape Town marathon, which is coming up quickly!
Monday: Easy 6.7 miles before work
Tuesday: Big workout before work; I had to be in the office, so I took the train into the office, dropped off my bag and ran from there around Hyde park! Warm-up, 3 miles at GMP, 1 mile jog, 3 miles GMP, 1 mile jog, and then 3 miles at GMP; a mile into the final set I ran into a coworker, a woman at the firm who I don’t know that well, and decided to chat with her and set aside the workout for a bit. We split ways as she headed into the office and I picked things up again and got to my 14 miles on the morning. Whew! That’s a lot.
Wednesday: Run commute with Tina and a friend of a friend who was visiting from Florida, 4.5 miles, then the office run, but it was raining pretty hard so we cut that run short, so my total mileage was 6.7. Tina was tapering for Berlin (where she broke 4 hours!) so it was best that it was shorter.
Wednesday evening we had a very fun work dinner at Cavita in Marylebone- delicious food and drinks! There is a lack of good Mexican food in London (in my opinion) but this place was top notch.
Thursday: I was a bit tired from the late dinner and margaritas, but I rallied and ran 14 miles, 9 with Ruth along the canal and the rest on my own. I had to work for a little bit but then we were off to Heathrow for a (delayed) flight to Munich Germany. One of the friends from London is German, and she has friends in Munich; it was great to have German speakers with us!
Friday: Dustin and I stayed at the Sofitel hotel, which was lovely and close to the festival grounds. We ran 7 miles together to explore Munich, mostly through the park which was gorgeous and so clean.
That day, we had a table booked at the Wildstuben tent.
As it was my first time at Oktoberfest, my friend Claire did all the planning, including booking the tents. I had no idea that you really can’t just show up and walk in (unless you want to wait in very long lines); you needed a booking!
Saturday: Though there was a lot of beer and heavy German food consumed the day before, we opted to get up and do a short run, 4.6 miles along the river. Then it was time to do it all again, this time at the Ammer tent, known for its roast chicken. Each tent has its own specialty- some even serve wine instead of beer!
Though there were definitely a lot of American accents, we actually learned that only 15% of attendees are NON-German. I assumed it was a lot more tourists but it’s still very much a German celebration. I really had a fabulous time with this group friends (some new!) and want to go back again next year!
Sunday we flew back to London and took a rest day. My body is not happy with me after all the beer but I fully embraced the experience and had such a memorable time.
Summary: 53 miles of running, no strength training- unless you count lifting those huge steins of beer, ha!
