Nottingham Forest made the most important appointment on this day back in 1975 when they turned to Brian Clough to succeed Allan Brown.

Brown’s side lost 2-0 at home to neighbourhood rivals Notts County and this was enough for the Forest board to show him the door. The club would never be the same again.

Clough had started the 1974/75 season at Leeds United, but left after spending only 44 days in charge. This would be his most successful time at a football club, and he won promotion with Forest back to the First Division in his second full season in charge.
The following season (1977/78) saw Clough’s men win the First Division title and the League Cup and he won the Manager of the Year in the process. Winning the First Division meant qualification into the European Cup and Forest won this twice in a row.

In all, Brian Clough won thirteen competitions with Nottingham Forest until he retired in 1993. The only trophy that eluded him was the FA Cup, but Forest reached the final in 1991, only to lose 2-1 against Tottenham Hotspur after extra time.
