On This Day – 21st January

Peter Shilton decided on this day in 1997 that it would probably be time to call an end to his long career.

With 125 England caps to his name and having played professionally for four decades, his 1,005th appearance was his last.

Shilton was playing for Leyton Orient, the eleventh club of his career and the opponents at Brisbane Road that day were Wigan Athletic. Unfortunately for Shilton, he was unable to end his 31-year career on a high as Wigan won the game 2-1.

During his 31-year playing career, Shilton won the First Division league title, two European Cups, a European Super Cup and the League Cup with Nottingham Forest and the Second Division with Leicester City. He played at three consecutive World Cups (1982, 1986 and 1990) and at the European Championships in 1988.
