Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur eye move for Crystal Palace attacker Eberechi Eze

Manchester United are set to compete with Tottenham Hotspur for the signing of Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze.

Eberechi Eze

Eberechi Eze, 25, has gone from strength to strength since joining Crystal Palace from Queens Park Rangers in the summer of 2020. After initially settling down, the creative midfielder has become a key figure for the Eagles. Despite an injury-hit 2023/24 season, he bagged 11 goals and four assists in 27 Premier League games.

After a sensational campaign, Eze has been called up to the England squad for Euro 2024. The 25-year-old’s performances in a Crystal Palace shirt have gone unnoticed, with several Premier League clubs vying for his signature.

In particular, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are pushing for Eze’s signature. They are reportedly ready to pay the creative midfielder’s £60 million release clause, with further add-ons in the future. The Eagles are expected to do everything in their powers to keep their star midfielder if his release clause is triggered—but they are resigned to losing him sooner rather than later.

Eberechi Eze is a hot property in the Premier League

Eberechi Eze’s stock has risen following his selection to the England squad for the European Championships. Both Man United and Spurs’ interest in the player is understandable.

Man United require a dynamic, creative midfielder to ease the workload off Bruno Fernandes’ shoulders. Moreover, Christian Eriksen and Donny Van de Beek are expected to leave the club in this transfer window, forcing the Red Devils to seek replacements.

Eze fits the profile of signings new Man United co-owners INEOS are planning to make this year. The 25-year-old would add goals, assists, invention and dynamism to Erik ten Hag’s side while enhancing the squad’s depth. He would be a great option to compete and cover for Fernandes, who has been the club’s most productive player in recent years.

Meanwhile, Spurs spent £40million to sign James Maddison from Leicester City last summer and they have no issues spending big on another creative midfielder. Bringing Eze to north London could help Ange Postecoglou’s side challenge for a top-four spot and help get even more out of Maddison, who was one of Spurs’ best players last season.

The England international’s versatility is one of his biggest assets as he can operate on both wings, through the middle as a No.10, in central midfield and a false 9, meaning that Eze could start anywhere in the team but most importantly alongside Maddison. With Eze in the team, Maddison could operate in a slightly deeper role and dictate play, making Tottenham a dangerous attacking unit to come up against for any opposition.

With competition plenty for the 25-year-old midfielder’s signature, it remains to be seen which of Man United or Spurs take the first step towards triggering his release clause.
