BREAKING: Mauricio Pochettino leaves Chelsea by mutual consent

Mauricio Pochettino and Chelsea have parted company by mutual agreement with immediate effect. His stay as head coach at Stamford Bridge has come to an end after just one season in charge of the club.

A strong end to the 2023/24 campaign saw Chelsea finish sixth in the Premier League and qualify for Europe. Mauricio Pochettino also took the Pensioners to the Carabao Cup final and the semi-final of the FA Cup. However, the West London club’s decision to reportedly part ways with Pochettino comes following the inference of a detailed internal review into the recently concluded campaign’s performance led by co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, and co-owner Behdad Eghbali.

Chelsea’s sporting directors, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, said: “On behalf of everyone at Chelsea, we would like to express our gratitude to Mauricio for his service this season. He will be welcome back to Stamford Bridge any time and we wish him all the very best in his future coaching career.”

Pochettino, 52, agreed to depart Chelsea late on Tuesday morning, thereby ending his 11-month stay after signing a two-year deal last summer. He is due to pocket a sizeable compensation fee from the Blues, who will immediately start searching for the Argentinean’s replacement with a young and progressive coach understood to be targeted.

Chelsea to start their hunt for a new manager

Mauricio Pochettino becomes the third permanent manager to lose the job under the Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital ownership following the sackings of Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter. Bruno Saltor took charge of Chelsea for one game last term before Frank Lampard was brought in as an interim manager. This means a total of five managers have worked under the club’s current owners in the past two years.

Names currently under consideration for the vacant managerial position at Chelsea are Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeness, Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna, Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca and Girona’s Michel. There is a lot of admiration for Kieran McKenna, who is being targeted by Brighton and Hove Albion following Roberto de Zerbi’s exit.

It was a tough year for Pochettino but he did end the season strongly, winning five Premier League games on the bounce to finish sixth in the standings. Despite this, the ex-Tottenham Hotspur tactician fell short of the lofty expectations of the owners and fans and lost his job as a result.
